Amsterdam - smoker friendly bar
In Amsterdam smoking at public areas is prohibited, you are actually also not allowed to smoke tobacco in Coffeeshops (they have smoking areas there). So there is almost no possibility to smoke and maybe also drink a nice beer - even not in the smoking areas of the Coffeeshops, as many of them are not allowed to sell alcohol. A very nice alternative is the smoker-friendly bar “Barneys Uptown”. It’s compared to the Coffeshop “Grasshoper” (which also features a smoker-friendly bar) not a touristy place which tries to mainly attract tourists but a place where also locals go. There you are allowed to smoke, drink alcohol, enjoy the time in a great atmosphere and you can also get some snacks and burgers. The Bar is located near Centraal Station (about 5-10 min walk) and across the street is the Barney’s Coffeeshop. I used to go there a lot with friends and if this arouse your interest, check out their homepage: http://www.barneys.biz/

I would love to have the same smoke-free regulations as in Holland here in Austria - as a non-smoker it sucks to go out and come back smelling like a cigarette .. not to mention the health issues!!!
ReplyDeleteYou definitely have a point, especially concerning the smelling like a cigarette. There has been a huge discussion about a non-smoking law in Austria too. In the end the outcome of the discussion is that smoking is only prohibited in the gastronomy. And even there are many different regulations:
ReplyDelete->the main room should be smoking-free,
->if a restaurant only has one room under 50 square meter – the owner can decide whether to operate as a non-smoking or a smoking restaurant.
->restaurants until 80 square meter have to prove if a structural separation is possible – if not, the owner can decide between smoking or non-smoking - if it’s possible the major room has to be a non-smoking area.
These regulations are clearly less strict compared to other European countries but this way it kind of satisfied both parties of the huge discussion we had in Austria.
If you ask me, the non-smoking laws in austria are a joke!!
ReplyDeleteI've to admit that many restaurants decided to be non-smoking ones but with bars/clubs it's a whole lot different! The main problem is that you give the owners the choice and in a society like ours with nearly parity of smokers and non-smokers most owners will avoid to anger their smoking clients ... non-smokers in Austria seem to be more willing to risk their health than smokers are to go outside.
If you ban smoking completely from bars/clubs/restaurants, sales won't drop as much as many owners think - just take a look at Finland, US, Netherlands, Italy and many many more -> why should it be any different in Austria?!?
I went to Amsterdam last weekend. Just for a few hours though because I actually visited a friend in Belgium but we went on a short trip to Amsterdam. From what I saw I really liked it, although I we did not have enough time to visit a bar. Next time I go I will make sure I check out these places cause they sound like a lot of fun :P
